The manuscript, held by her family since the author’ death in1959, has been released to tell the story of the school and the people of Hiroshima on the 50th anniversary of the first atom bomb used on a human population. The story is unique when compared to other A-bomb literature in its emphasis on the lives of the people before the bomb falls. In the Foreword, Helen D. Wiegel, Director Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial Collection, Wilmington College, Ohio, writes: “Moving at a leisurely pace, with exquisite attention to the minutiae of daily life, the author brings to life the various people in the story. In beautifully painted word pictures we see and feel what the city was like on the hot August days. Flashbacks bring in information about earlier years of the school, but inexorably we are moved closer and closer to 8:15 a. m. on August six”An Epilogue, written by Miss Johnson’s nephew, provides information with extensive pictures describing the school, from its founding in 1886 until the present day.
